This year, the Chinese year 4710 begins on January 23, 2012. Mrs. Jew, Chinese Spanish teacher at Casady School stated, " Chinese New Year celebrations usually lasts for 15 days, ends at Feb. 6 this year---the Lantern Festival."
The Chinese all over the world are celebrating the New Year with a new sign, the dragon (EL DRAGÓN). Last year was the year of the rabbitt (EL CONEJO),
But what are the Chinese up to during the New Year Chinese festivities? Chinese families celebrate Chinese New Year by using a different mix of their traditions, beliefs, superstitions, lucky signs and charms. According to Chinese legend, a long time ago, the gods called together all the animals on the planet, and told them that there will be a race.
The first twelve winners will be included in a special list. So on the chosen date, all the animals lined up and started to race each other. Being the smallest, the rat (LA RATA, EL RATÓN, EL RATONCITO TOPO GIGO) was able to weave its way through and under all the other animals and ended up crossing the finish line first. Next came the ox (EL TORO), followed by the tiger (EL TIGRE), the rabbit (EL CONEJO), the dragon (EL DRAGÓN), the snake (LA SERPIENTE, LA CULEBRA), the horse (EL CABALLO), the goat (EL CHIVO), the monkey(EL MONO), the rooster (EL GALLO), the dog (EL PERRO), and lastly, the pig(EL CERDO, EL COCHINO, EL PUERCO).
That's how those twelve animals ended up representing the twelve animal signs of the Chinese zodiac, each with its own specific characteristics. For the Chinese, the dragon is the luckiest and most auspicious of all the animal signs.
Chinese parents want their kids to get married in the Year of the Dragon. Chinese couples rush to make "dragon babies" because they're supposed to be lucky. You can just imagine the number of Chinese babies that will be born this year.
In addition, for the Chinese, the new year means decorating and wearing red, having lots of food at home, attending fireworks and parades, and having lots of red envelopes with money inside. There would be round fruits so that there'll be lots of money, and pineapples for prosperity. A big fried fish would also be present at tables because fish supposedly represented abundance.

Oklahoma City MLK DAY EVENTS: The Prayer Breakfast: 7 a.m. in the Reed Center, Sheraton Midwest City Hotel, 5800 Will Rogers Road. ($10/person). From I-40, exit Sooner Road, north on Sooner Rd, turn right/east onto Will Rogers Road. Organizers expect 400-500 people for breakfast followed by speeches and music.
The Silent March: 9 a.m. from the Clara Luper NAACP Freedom Center, 2609 N MLK Ave, marching to the Oklahoma History Center, at NE 23rd Street, east of Lincoln Blvd.
The Bell Ringing: 11 a.m. National Bell Ringing at Oklahoma's replica of the Liberty Bell in front of the Oklahoma History Center, north side of NE 23rd St, just east of Lincoln Blvd.
MLK Jr. Holiday Coalition Program: Noon, at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral , 127 NW 7th St (NW 7th & Robinson). The program features a performance of King’s "I Have a Dream" speech and comments by local opinion leaders.
PARADE Line-up: 1 – 2 p.m. on the streets west of NW 7th Street and Robinson Ave..
PARADE STEP-OFF: 2 p.m. from the corner of Broadway and NW 7th, proceeding down Broadway to Sheridan, then east through Bricktown to the Coca Cola Convention Center. There will be grandstands at NW 5th and Broadway. For more information on the parade, or to be involved, call coordinators William Jones at (405) 306-8440 or Garland Pruitt at (405) 473-6152.

It was fun having you in my first Middle School Spanish class EVER. You taught me many things which will make me a better teacher in the future. My biggest lesson is "It is not about the right to be equal, but rather the equal right to be different." RESPECT OUR DIVERSITY. TREASURE WHAT WE HAVE IN COMMON AS HUMANS.
